Dear Parents and Guardians of Stanwood-Camano Grades 6-8 Students:

This fall, teachers in grades 6-8 will be instructing students in required HIV/AIDS prevention education. In 1988 the Washington State Legislature passed the AIDS Omnibus Act which mandates HIV/AIDS prevention education beginning in Grade 5 and continuing through Grade 12.

A meeting will be held for parents/guardians of students in grades 6-8 to provide an opportunity to preview the HIV/AIDS prevention materials. This will also enable you and your child to have meaningful family discussions before and after the classroom presentations. Communication about specific dates for instruction will come from your school.

Following the preview of the instructional materials, parents/guardians who wish to have their child excused from participation in the HIV/AIDS prevention program can sign an opt out form that will be available.  State law provides that a parent or guardian must attend such a meeting before they can have their child or legal ward excused from participation in the HIV prevention program.

We look forward to discussing this important topic with you.
